Kinja'd!!!

I received the flightsim throttle parts I ordered back on 26 July. Too bad my GTX 1080 is essentially dead and now I can’t fly...

Bummer about the gpu, what's the problem?

Every now and again it shuts off, with both attached monitors going to sleep. On reboot everything seems normal until Windows starts, then instead of the login screen I just get nine little dots at the bottom of the screen. Sometimes the Windows logo is distorted on bootup. The unit isn’t overheating and the fans are working fine.

Any troubleshooting hints? I’ve got the latest drivers installed via a clean installation. The thermal paste was replaced several months back. It’s never been overclocked.

Humm, not too typical to have those types of symptoms,   sounds like either a capacitor isn’t happy or cold solder joints somewhere.

What’s the model number?

I’ll have to check my receipts to see if I bought the extended warranty. I’ve had the card for a couple of years now, bought as a return from Micro Center.

Intersting I have this exact card, picked it up 2nd hand earlier this year....I haven’t heard of the is sues you’re having on this card, I’ll do a little diging.

I wonder if baking a video card is still a thing?

Hopefully that shouldn’t be necessary. I found the receipt and it shows that I bought the card in July 2018. If I’m reading things correctly it has a 3-year warranty so I should be covered. Hopefully they don’t say anything about having replaced the thermal compound...

Nice, always key to save receipts, d on’t mention the thermal compound and it won’t be an issue. Assuming  the RMA goes through you’ll likely receive a different card, not sure what it’s be....maybe a 2060.

Well, that would probably be a step down. I might take a 2070 or a lower-end 3000-series if they’re available. I might even be willing to pay the difference and get something like a 3070 or 3080, if that’s an option. I don’t have any money, but I still have credit cards...

Something weird just happened. I was just about to load up Just Cause 3 after playing Just Cause 4 for a little while and the same exact problem occurred on my computer, this time with the fan(s) cranking up to full speed. This wasn’t with the 1080, but the old 770 I put in as a replacement. Same loss of video, same 9 dots on the screen.

I’m getting the impression that this has something to do with my Windows installation or something else on the computer rather than the video card. I don’t think two cards would fail in exactly the same way within a couple of days of each other. I did recently reset the BIOS back to defaults and that didn’t cure anything whilst I was trying to figure out what was going wrong with this computer.

My Windows install is a little weird. At first I was running the same install from my old 3770K machine, but it couldn’t be activated and wasn’t set up for UEFI. I reinstalled and then used a migration program to bring over all of my apps and settings. Perhaps I should have just reinstalled everything from scratch rather than trying to keep everything as it was.

Yeah, sounds like something else is certainly going on. Does that motherboard have another PCIe slot you can try the 1080 in? If not, reinstall windows and based on what you’ve said about migrating, I’m leaning towards a fresh install regardless.

PSU>MB>RAM in that order.

Meaning you should check all connections and cables first. Then try swapping in a known good used PSU. Then pull out the FLUKE and test board connections. Then when it’s [finger crossed] safer, throw a whole ton of power into RAM using a software test. Again after pulling it out and looking for issues/reseating.

I would’ve been shocked if 1080 prices didn’t equate to at least an equal level 2080 in stock. Even at reduced MC open box prices.
